antiglobalization

protests in

Trieste

If politicians and economists created global economy, global market and global consumers in a global village, their decisions and actions later on produced new civil society, new global public, to be opposed to globalisation and to warn of global catastrophe. This so called global public gathered in Trieste and held protests against eight major industrialized countries deciding six milliard people fate.

G8 environment ministers meeting was held between the 2nd and 4th of March in Trieste, Italy, for talks on a climate change and sustainable development. In opposition to the meeting several thousand demonstrators have held protests.

After Seattle, New York, Nice, Prague, Davos, after Genoa, Ancona and Bologna on first weekend in march happened Trieste. On the 3rd of March different non-governmental groups joined together in march through Trieste to point out their disagreement with the G8 and global policy. These protests, in difference to the previous antiglobalization protests, were loud but mostly peaceful and passed without any major clashes with the police, although some smoke bombs were thrown at security forces.

On the 4th of March protests were held in two border cities, Italian city Gorizia and Slovenian city Nova Gorica. Protesters marched through the cites and joined at the borderline between the states. Symbolically they wanted to break down the frontier dividing two cities and pointed out the absurdity of borders in Europe. They urged for free movement and equal human rights for all, women and man.

We took a look behind the scenes, to know the people and the movements joined at the protests. Who are they, what movement do they belong to, what is their opinion, ….
