Traditional jumps in Mostar 2004.

 Photo: Urban Golob/www.ipak.org

Last week of July the famous "Stari Most" bridge in Mostar (Bosnia Herzegovina)was re-opened after its destruction during the Balkan war, attracting international participation and recognition. At Saturday, 31st of July this bridge was the location of the traditional bridge jumping, which has been taking place in this town for 438 consecutive years. At the "Ikari 2004", 75 participants from Mostar and all other states of former Yugoslavia - including three veterans of more than 70 years of age - jumped off the 22 meters bridge which had been reconstructed just like the original. Ahead of 30.000 spectators the winner became one of the favourites Haris Dzemat (29). For the first time in the history, three professional cliff divers also jumped off the bridge (out of competition). World Champion Orlando Duque from Colombia, Australian Joe Zuber and Zvezdan Groscic from Serbia were the attractions.

Tomaz Lavric

Text: Igor Prassel/www.ipak.org

Tomaz Lavric - TBC; smokes a lot, doesn’t get enough exercise and hates public appearances.

Tomaz Lavric, better known as TBC (but sometimes also as Diareja, J. Visarjonovic, Ton Ton, Lovro Matic…) was born in Ljubljana on a stormy autumn night in 1964. He went to study paintings at the Ljubljana Art Academy, but escaped the school in 1987 because he started to work on illustrations job for the weekly Mladina magazine. Ever since he’s been making a living by drawing illustrations, comics and political cartoons. The most successful contemporary Slovenian author, Lavric "the great chameleon... ...a man who draws in a thousand styles", as defined by his Slovene colleague Jakob Klemencic, links his different drawing stiles with a striking talent for cinematic composition. His drawing style has been reduced to an expressive contrast of black and white.

Poklad of Lastovo

Photo/text: Andrej Crcek/www.ipak.org

Poklad Carnival Event on the remote Adriatic Island of Lastovo is unique in the world. On Poklad's (Shrove) Tuesday, the Poklad puppet is sliding down the 300 meters long rope (three times), with simultaneous petards' detonations going on under his boots (this is only part of the final exhausting ceremony which will last until the morning of the following day).

The ancient traditional story says that Poklad Carnival Event is celebrated as a memory of an old historical event old more then 500 years. Catalan pirates attacked the nearby island of Korcula and sent a messenger to the island of Lastovo, with a request to surrender. Instead, Lastovo people took weapons, while their women and children went as pilgrims to Saint George church praying for help. And sure enough, the help came as a storm which destroyed the Catalan fleet on its way to Lastovo. After that, the Lastovo people took the messenger and put him on the donkey through the village to laugh at him, and then he was let down the rope and finally burnt.

A PORTRAIT OF SLOVENIAN FAMILY

Photo/text info:Bojan Brecelj/www.ipak.org

Family Vidic is a hardworking peasant family, in many ways representing the best of what many peasant families in Slovenia are trying to achieve

Paule — did training for locksmith after primary school

Stefka — finished 4 years of high school for food technology (all together 12 classes of education )

Peter — 13 years - 7 grade primary school

Barbara — 12 years — 6 grade primary school

Tomaz — 7 years — 1 grade primary school

Family VIDIC

Paule Vidic originates from a peasant family of eight children, some 50 km away. For a small country as Slovenia is, distance of 50 km means a different region with different dialect and habits. Stafka Vidic, wife of Paule was born in this house.. Actually when Paule got here , farm was small and could not provide for a small family . They build new house , stables rented more land …, and now after 15 years of hard work they live conformable life: new big family house, building smaller house in vineyard , modern machinery for work in the fields, 30 cows and modern system for milking —collecting milk, 10 ha of his own land and 16 ha renting…. carpenters workshop, two good cars …. Stefka beside all the work at home and occupation with three children is also doing full time job of food technologist for milk control . Paule is peasant, but beside that he has also supplementary carpenters trade where he produce pieces of furniture for nearby big furniture industry NOVOLES, Paule started his career as doorman at the factory …

Entering EU —YES it is positive for having opportunity for commerce , BUT for country and peasants, Slovenian culture will disappear — our collective conciseness and social life will disappear…

STEFKA AND PAULE ANSWERING QUESTIONS ON HOW THEY SEE TRANSITION TO EU :

And what about the fall of the system in Russia and fall of the wall in Germany… :

Before 91 did you ever travel :

How do you see Europe : does it look different than Slovenia for you ?

Which country would you think of first when you say Europe …

AND what is your opinion about NATO ?

What could you say positive about EU - and our future in it …

What do you think the future will bring ?

…………. Yes it will be positive for our government since 400 Slovenes will go to live in Brussels for a very good pay…

 Ledno plezanje

Fotografije in besedilo: Urban Golob

PREDELICA

Photo/text:Urban Golob

LUXUN PARK SHANGHAI

Photo/text: Borut Peterlin/www.ipak.org

Shanghai is a city with highest economical growth in Asia and because of the third largest sea port in the world and the multiethnic culture is also called as the Asian New York. The economical growth is manifesting through modern urban architecture and fascinates with 460m tall TV tower called Pearl of Orient, WTC as the third tallest skyscraper in the world, fantastic Opera house, elevated highways and futuristic plans as the one to construct a 9 km long bridge over Yangtze River. Their sixteen million residents present a cheap working force that attracts foreign investors. Chinese working force is admired through out the world, but not everybody knows that behind that is more then just the quantity of workers. As all great empires also communistic party of China was concerned with psycho-physical condition of their people, so they were thinking about a physical exercise that would fight the syndrome of overpopulation. Shanghai has more 120 green parks that judging by the inner activities can not be compared to any other in the west. An example: Imagine early morning at six and you are on your way to work. You stop in the park, lay down a briefcase and with a partner dance a waltz or two in a company of hundreds of classic dance fans. The dance session usually lasts for an hour.

THE GREAT FEAST

Photo:Matjaz Kacicnik/www.ipak.org

‘Eid al-Adha, the sacrifice feast (Bayram) is also called in Egypt "the Great Feast" in relation to the "Small feast" which is after Ramadan, the fasting month. The story on which ‘Eid al-Adha is based exists not only in the Qur’an (Sura 37:83 till 37:113) but also in the Old Testament ( I. Moses book chapter 22). It is the story of Abraham being ordered by God to give his only son Isaac (in the Qur’an story this son is called Ismail) as an offering. Abraham obeyed God’s order and took his son Isaac (Ismail) to sacrifice him to God, and at the moment after setting everything to slaughter his son, God send Abraham a ram because of his obedience.

SEJEM V NAMCE BAZARJU

Photo/text: Urban Golob/www.ipak.org

Redkejsi zrak in neizprosno tezki odpravarski nahrbtniki so nam pocasi jemali hitrost, v kateri smo uspeli premikati svoje noge se nekaj sto metrov nizje.

Njihova razmisljanja dajejo akrobatskemu jadralnemu padalstvu razseznosti duhovnih tehnik.

OMAN

"Who can reach us? Who can reach us?" the driver kept repeating my answer... No, I did not say who but how can we reach the place before night. "Well, I am not used to drive on bad roads...actually, I have never driven on this road yet!" We were really going slow the three of us, the driver, the official government guide and myself in an air-conditioned Land Cruiser. I was wondering how he could not remember any more how the roads had been just a few years ago when there had been no high way and not even a single paved road in the country? I was getting dizzy not only by the road that was already for some eight hours bumpy, but because of the culture shock I had to digest in only two days of my staying in the country.... We were heading towards Ra's Al Hadd, a very special place on the coast where only on the days of the full moon in that month giant turtles from Indian Ocean are coming ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. The area was protected, and in fact they really ment it - the place is wired and there were guards on the gate. "We have been expecting you already for some hours..." I have heard this statement everywhere I went in Oman. Everything has been so organised all the time even when we went to visit the nomads...," commented the photographer about his first impressions in Oman.

WORLD HUMAN POWER SPEED CHALLENGE

Photo/text:Arne Hodalic/www.ipak.org

Already years ago numerous enthusiast begin to think about more aerodynamic shape of normal bicycle because the main obstacle to achieve higher speed is air resistance. It was proved that the cyclist in lying position, surrounded with aerodynamic housing, is essentially quicker from usual competitive bikes. International Cycling Union has decided not to admit this kind of speed records anymore and vehicles on human power could really start to develop. Interesting technological solutions, contemporary materials, computer simulations, and also the maddest constructional ideas could unleash free. Only essential restrains till today are the demands for exclusive human power, horizontal racetrack and restricted maximum wind. IHPVA — International Human Powered Vehicle Association already from 1975 organized different competitions for these futuristic vehicles so every autumn in Battle Mountain in Nevada competitors compete with the quickest vehicles on human power. Already three world records were achieved there, and the last one from the year 2002 was 130,4 km/hour. Cyclists accelerate on distance over 8 km, but the speed is measured only the last 200 metres of route. The quickest on this competition is entitled to call himself the fastest person on his own power in the world…

SEPIK - THE DEEPEST RIVER

Photo: Bojan Brecelj/www.ipak.org

The river Sepik would be but just another river if it didn't flow through the wildest, mysterious and thick rain forest jungle in a very remote part of the world, in Papua New Guinea. The amazing characteristic of this river is not her lenght but her incredible

depth. She has a strong flow, at her mouth the depth reaches more than 200 m, while near the middle the river is 20 m deep which enables big ships to enter the river from sea and drive the boat inland to about 800 km.

Sepik is for sure a synonym of the unknown, unexplored, mysterious, yet the traditional culture has developed for 20 000 years. Already the country itself evokes mysteriousness and stories about wild bushmen, cannibals or Cousteau's documentary films which lead to the fact that even today the whole country is not all explored.

The natives, living by the river in harsh living conditions where death by malaric mosquitos or other diseases in this tropic humid heat in an everyday event, have built a very special attitude towards life that surrounds them. Animism pervades in every atom of their closest environment. They have built reciprocal relationship with the spirits.

ZILJSKO STEHVANJE

Photo/text: Urban Golob/www.ipak.org

Skozi stoletja so Slovenci v Ziljski dolini dali svoji obliki kvintane novo podobo in jo uprizarjajo ob zegnu oziroma

prazniku svojih svetnikov.

TOPOLOVE

Photo/text: Urban Golob/www.ipak.org
