The central meeting place for the youth is Piazza Gesu’ Nuovo (Gesu’ Nuovo Square); many also socialise with their friends in Officina 99, an independent social centre, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The deserted factory building has been occupied by young people from working families. Here they have found a place for socialising and creative expression, which they could not afford in the expensive city bars. They manifest their dissatisfaction at numerous meetings in the streets of Naples. This year, these meetings also serve as preparations for a big demonstration to be held in Genoa during the G-8 summit in July. |
