The Neapolitans believe that on the first Saturday in May believers’ prayers in the cathedral cause the miraculous blood of their patron saint, San Gennaro (Saint Januarius) to flow. The miracle is a good sign; on the last occasion when the blood did not liquefy, Naples was struck by a devastating earthquake. The patron saint’s blood, which in 1389 miraculously liquefied for the first time, is as hard as stone throughout the rest of the year.
